Violence against women is a national emergency and is recognised as a key social policy issue by all State, Territory and Federal governments. Already this year, 39 women have been killed in Australia as a result of men who use violence. In Victoria, violence against women is the leading contributor to death, disability and illness for women aged 15-44.

But violence against women is not inevitable - it is preventable. Now is the time for Victoria to tackle the root causes and move toward total elimination of violence against women.

At this conference, we will bring Australia’s leaders and experts together to describe how they are addressing the root causes of violence across portfolios – in sports, education, business, health, justice, employment, planning and infrastructure.

By attending this conference, you’ll learn how every government official and every policy officer can shape a Victorian community that is safer, more respectful and more equal in the future.

The conference will feature experts from across sectors and industries, including:

  • The Hon. Fiona Richardson MP, Victorian Minister for Women and Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence
  • Natasha Stott Despoja AM, Chair, Our Watch
  • Elizabeth Broderick, Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Australian Human Rights Commission
  • Assistant Commissioner Dean McWhirter, Family Violence Command, Victoria Police
  • Vice Admiral Ray Griggs AO CSC RAN, Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force
  • Peggy O’Neal, President, Richmond Football Club
  • Rob Hulls, Director, Centre for Innovative Justice, RMIT and former Victorian Attorney-General and Deputy Premier
  • The Hon. Kelly Vincent MLC, South Australia, Dignity for Disability Party
  • Jerril Rechter, CEO, VicHealth
  • Prof. John Catford, Chair of the Board, VicHealth

This event is funded by the Victorian Government and will build readiness across departments to respond to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence, which will be delivered in February 2016.

Who should attend
The conference is for senior policy officers and decision-makers in the Victorian Government. We understand that it may not be possible to attend the entire conference, so we welcome single-day registrations. If you are unable to attend please consider delegating your invitation to a colleague with the capacity to influence and directly inform policy development.

Please note - Photography and/or filming will take place at this event for use in VicHealth publications and promotions including online/social channels.
